Presentation "Roots and Soil"

This site will give you a short overview about the presentation. Next to an introduction, root systems, soil characteristics, root structure and function, and the rhizosphere are discussed.

The presentation is based on HTML and JavaScript. It has been tested using "Netscape Communicator Version 4.7", "Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5" and "Mozilla 1.6" under the windows operating system. Because this internet-site has been programmed in a very similar style as the CD-presentation, a good performance of these pages implies a similar performance of the CD.

The presentation can be obtained upon request for 20 Euro (inclusive 19 % value added tax and transfer expenses within Germany).

Introduction: This presentation gives a general introduction into the most important processes occurring in soils and roots, as well as a small impression of the diversity of life below ground. The Html-files are to be used as accompanying material to the respective figures and animations from the directory "presentation". These figures and animations should be presented in alphabetical order. They are produced for a screen size of 800 x 600 Pixel.

Introduction

Root systems: Root systems are as diverse as the aerial parts of a plant. Their architecture tells much about the strategy for survival of a given plant.

Root systems

Soil and nutrients: Soil is formed in a complex way and is subjected to various external influences. In the end these factors determine, how many nutrients can be obtained by the plants from the soil.

Soil

Root function: Roots extract mineral nutrients and water from the soil. This chapter explains, how they cope with this task.

Root functions

The rhizosphere: The immediate surroundings of roots – the rhizosphere – is an important habitat of many soil organisms. Detailing the example of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, this chapter shows, how close the root can be connected with these organisms.
